The Formula 1 engines fired up again today at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, the stage for the 18th and penultimate round of the world championship. The McLaren of Jenson Button was fastest in the first session of free practice (1.40.263), ahead of the Red Bull of Mark Webber (1.40.389) and the other McLaren of Lewis Hamilton (1.40.403). The two Ferraris of Fernando Alonso (1.40.801) and Felipe Massa (1.41.260) were fifth and sixth fastest at the end of the action that was predominantly given over to a comparative test between the tyres brought by Pirelli to the futuristic circuit. After starting on the Medium compound, both Ferrari drivers tested the experimental Soft tyre that has been made available for this first day of testing: both Felipe’s ‘extra’ sets were damaged, the first probably due to contact with debris and the second after he went off during the session.
