Honda's biggest concern is about the gap in performance to the other power unit manufacturers rather than reliability, according to the head of its F1 project Yusuke Hasegawa
Having been optimistic a new power unit concept would allow the Japanese manufacturer to close the gap to the rest of the field, pre-season running has been heavily restricted by reliability problems. Whenever the car has run, the power unit has proven to be far from the competitive level Honda had expected, leading Fernando Alonso to complain earlier this week that "there is no reliability and there is no power.
Speaking exclusively to RACER, when asked if there were any potential problems Honda had been expecting, Hasegawa replied: "Of course not.
"Of course we knew the performance level but we didn't know the level of the other teams, so from a comparison point of view we are a little bit scared of the situation and it's too optimistic for us to expect a very good result in Melbourne. But from a trouble point of view, of course I didn't expect such a wide variety of problems that we suffered."
While Renault was aware it had an ERS weakness before starting pre-season testing, Hasegawa says there were no warnings any problems would arise for Honda in Spain.
"No, not at all. Everything that has happened has not been seen on the dyno, I believe. No.
"Especially the day two issue and this week's day one issue, we didn't expect such a problem."
"Of course it is disappointing but to me it is good that we can find out the issues before Melbourne. Of course it is bad for testing and to disturb the running time."
Hasegawa believes the lack of performance is more a case of rival manufacturers progressing more than expected, rather than Honda failing to deliver on its targets. However, he is confident reliability will improve by Melbourne, allowing the team to get more out of the power unit itself.
"Of course we also improved our engine performance level; however, it looks like the PU performance improvement of the others is better and higher than us. We may even be further back, so that is very disappointing.
"From the settings or a setting point of view we may have some things we can do in these two weeks. In the next two weeks we will try to find some ways of tuning the engine, and it can have better performance, definitely."
Impossible is nothing.
