Both Red Bull and Aston Martin understand this year's regulations.
The shape of the Mercedes gearbox (large) deprives the diffuser of freedom .
Due to the thick gearbox of the AMR23, the volume of air flowing through both the bottom and top surfaces of the diffuser is small.
The Mercedes gearbox has a pull rod (red arrow) and an inboard suspension such as a torsion bar (yellow line) built in the middle.
The inboard suspension parts are built in behind the gear cassette (red circle) and the fairing of the drive shaft (green line) is slanted and thick

You can see that the part where the drive shaft (green dotted line) connects is clearly thin.
The shape of the gearbox has been shaved off along the round gears of the differential.
Compared to Mercedes, it has an uneven shape, but it is the part that is buried in the diffuser and gives bottom surface a degree of freedom.The upper surface spreads space and can flow air smoothly. RB adopted pushrods and took most of the inboard suspension out of the gearbox
The wide center flat area increases the freedom of vehicle height.
The floor is effective only when it is close to the road surface, but the wide flat area means that there are many areas close to the road surface when the vehicle height is raised.
Combined with strong floor edge aero seals, you can choose between a taller ride height and a more supple suspension setting.
The most important thing is to increase the floor downforce overall without relying on the venturi tunnel (for the kick point) , which has a strong negative pressure for speed (for vehicle height).
There is almost no change in the Mercedes gearbox 2022 and 2023.
The AMR23 is fast even with a fat Mercedes gearbox, but in the end it's also a part that can't catch up with Red Bull.
Red Bull may be a double-edged sword with this aggressive gearbox.
