Sutil: F1's master of overtaking

It's strange but it's true. Force India driver Adrian Sutil made more 'proper' overtaking moves than anybody else during the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship.

Time after time his aggressive nature behind the wheel yielded him position after position as the German made 40 genuine passing manoeuvres during the 19 races staged; that's twice as many as world champion Sebastian Vettel and four times more than Jenson Button.

To determine F1's 'raciest' driver, the Castrol Rankings delved deep into the stats amassed over the 2010 season and recorded how many on-track overtaking manoeuvres each driver made.

First lap moves do not count as positions gained during the initial couple of miles are often as a result of collisions scattering the pack or just a good drive off the line. Places made up during pitstops or as a result of retirements have not been counted either.

Here are the top five:

1. Adrian Sutil
The stats don't lie and Force India driver Sutil made 40 successful passing moves during the year (plus a few unsuccessful ones, as Kamui Kobayashi will remember all too well), putting him on top of the list.

The German was helped on occasion by underperforming in qualifying, which left him further down the grid than he should have been and with a car capable of propelling him further up. On other occasions though, such as the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, his involvement in a first corner collision with Robert Kubica left him to charge up through the field impressively.

On two occasions during the season he was the chief overtaker, Sutil passing five and six rivals respectively in Italy and Korea. His best figures though, came in the wet/dry Chinese Grand Prix. Despite making seven moves during that race though, his total was beaten by Lewis Hamilton's 11 on the same day.

2. Felipe Massa
Surprised? Thought so. For a man often described as being a soft touch while in battle, Massa showed a steely determination during 2010 and made 37 overtaking moves - an average of almost two per race.

That all those moves came in seven races (compared to Sutil's 12), perhaps tell their own story though.

Eleven spots made up in Canada were as a result of collisions with Michael Schumacher and Vitantonio Liuzzi that forced him to pit for a new nose while at Silverstone a collision with his team-mate Fernando Alonso on the first lap dropped him to the tail of the field and forced him to fight his way through.

3. Jaime Alguersuari & Fernando Alonso
Both drivers made 31 moves during the year, but we'll unofficially give Alguersuari the nod over his Spanish countryman as a "Jaime is faster than you," message never went out to his Toro Rosso team-mate Sebastien Buemi.

While Alonso was being assisted to his German GP win, Alguersuari was busy having one of his more frenetic days. After breaking his nose against the back of Buemi's car, he passed five others by the finish.

Alguersuari actually overtook cars in 13 races - more than anyone else and, while Alonso did so in nine of them. His most prolific spells came in China and Belgium as he made seven moves in each race.

5. Rubens Barrichello & Vitantonio Liuzzi
Barrichello was surprisingly one of the top two overtakers during the first half of the season, with his latter half appearing more gentile, but actually coinciding with Williams getting its act together and the Brazilian therefore qualifying much higher up the field - where passing is always more tricky.

He was the primary overtaker in both Malaysia and Turkey as he made six and seven places up in those races, and ended the year on 29 moves - the same number as Liuzzi.

The Italian was, like his Force India team-mate Sutil, often guilty of not maximising his potential in qualifying and squandered his best grid spot of the year in Canada after coming together with Massa on the first lap.

And the rest...
Most of you were probably expecting Hamilton to feature high up on the list, especially after 11 passes in China - a single race figure that only Massa can match - but a seven-race streak in which he made only one move - around the outside of Vitaly Petrov in Hungary - cost him a spot in the top five.

Hamilton just misses out on the list, his 26 overtaking moves during the season putting him seventh.

World champion Vettel made 20 moves during 2010, giving him a share of 10th place with Nico Hulkenberg, while his fellow Red Bull driver Mark Webber passed 18 rivals, the same number as Michael Schumacher.

The least number of moves among the front-runners came from 2009 world champion Button, who made just nine during the whole season - an average of less than one move every two races.

His canny wins in Australia and China are fondly remembered, but in wet/dry conditions he made only one overtaking move in each race, instead benefitting from extra pitstops made by others.

Kobayashi too, finds himself way down the list, despite being lauded for his ballsy moves at Valencia and Suzuka among other places. The Japanese Sauber driver made just 13 moves all year - the two aforementioned events accounting for five of them.

With the exception of Button, the only other drivers to fail to make it into double figures were those from F1's new teams. The best of these was Heikki Kovalainen, who made eight moves in his Lotus.

Just two drivers failed to make any overtaking moves, and these were Hispania's Christian Klien and Sakon Yamamoto. Starting from the back with the slowest car was never going to make it easy.
